What is Therapy?

The short answer to this question is that therapy is a safe, confidential space to explore challenges that you have, are, or may soon face in life. Therapy utilizes different types of strategies including talking, deep breathing, meditation, art, body movement, and both spiritual/cultural healing traditions. All interventions used are evidence-based and client-centered.

What's the Long Answer?

(For those that want to know)

Therapy comes in many forms but when it comes to mental health, the typical realm of therapy is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy uses a combination of psychology, social work, medicine/health, and/or holistic knowledge to create avenues for clients to heal from the inside out. Some common interventions include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Meditation/Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Expressive Arts Therapy. The list of possible interventions are exponentially longer than this list; however, these are some of the most well-known.

Psychotherapy is most commonly conducted either in-office or via telehealth in 50 min time blocks with the therapist guiding clients through interventions to meet the goals that the client has previously established. While I always use evidence-based interventions and models, I do tend to incorporate some lesser known options that are designed for specific populations or specific needs. Therapy does take longer to "work" than medication; however, because therapy takes a holistic approach, does tend to help create lasting effects.
